Erling Haaland’s agent Mino Raiola admits he was ‘perhaps too careful’ to move him to Borussia Dortmund when he turned down Manchester United as a £ 154 million star awaits his next big move with Old Trafford an option again.
- Erling Haaland seems to be leaving Borussia Dortmund more and more this summer
- His agent, Mino Raiola, admitted he was “too careful” to move him to Germany
- Haaland has quickly developed into one of the world’s most in-demand strikers
- Real Madrid, Chelsea and both Manchester clubs are expected to compete for him
- According to reports this week, Dortmund had set a price tag of £ 154 million for Haaland
Super agent Mino Raiola has admitted he was “perhaps too careful” in moving Erling Haaland to Borussia Dortmund last year, with the Norwegian striker now the most in-demand player in world football.
The race to get the signature of Haaland will dominate the summer transfer window, with Real Madrid, Chelsea and both Manchester clubs expected to compete fiercely to recruit him.
Haaland, who has scored 33 goals in 31 games this season, has continued his meteoric rise with Dortmund in the Bundesliga after a stunning breakthrough at Red Bull Salzburg last season.
Mino Raiola has admitted he was ‘perhaps too careful’ when moving from Erling Haaland to Dortmund
Raiola will lead negotiations with several clubs in what is expected to be a fierce battle for Haaland’s signature this summer
Before joining Dortmund in January 2020, Haaland and agent Raiola declined the opportunity to reunite the player with former Molde boss Ole Gunner Solskjaer at Old Trafford.
But United will be back for Haaland this summer, and Raiola admitted he was “perhaps too careful” about selling his client to Dortmund, where his development was so rapid.
In conversation with The Athletic, Raiola said: ‘Everyone was wrong with Haaland. He did things a lot faster than anyone imagined.
‘Haaland is ahead of its own development. He is ahead of his own schedule. Maybe I was too careful when I said, “Oh no, let’s move to Dortmund instead of I-don’t-know-where”.
‘This guy – I am 100 percent convinced and everyone is convinced – can move to any club, wherever he wants, even at this level. And he could have done that last year.
‘But maybe there were still teams (who said) last year,’ Oh, he was in Red Bull (Salzburg), can he do it in another club? ‘
“He is faster than his own prediction. So yes, Haaland is the talk of the town. ‘
Haaland turned down Manchester United last year, but the Red Devils are still interested in him
Previous negotiations between United and Haaland’s representatives collapsed after the Premier League giants refused to comply with their demands.
Obviously, Dortmund has agreed to give Raiola and the player’s father Alf-Inge Haaland a significant portion of the 19-year-old player’s future resale value, who the hierarchy at Old Trafford did not approve.
But in December 2019, Raiola insisted that it was Haaland who rejected United’s claims after the Red Devils blamed the agent for the deal’s collapse.
“I don’t know if Manchester United are informing this, but if they are they are covering their own loss and I find that strange and disappointing,” said Raiola. The Telegraph
There was no argument between me and (United executive vice chairman) Ed Woodward. It was just normal negotiation and the player chose a different path.
‘If they want to blame someone, blame me, but the player is happy. He made his choice and we went through a normal process. ‘
Haaland, currently with Norway, has scored 33 goals in 31 games this season
Earlier this week, it was reported that Dortmund had set a £ 154 million price tag for clubs that would have to pay this summer if they want Haaland, as they want to fend off attempts to sign their star striker.
Any move for Haaland should also ensure United should soften their reluctance to work with Raiola, who has been problematic in recent months with its stance on the future of another of its clients, Paul Pogba.
Manchester City are also desperate to bring in Haaland and have reportedly made him their number 1 target to replace Sergio Aguero, who will be leaving this summer.
The sun Haaland tops a list of replacements for the Argentine legend with striker Tottenham and England captain Harry Kane another option for Pep Guardiola.
Haaland is currently on international service with Norway and has so far started both of their World Cup qualifiers against Gibraltar and Turkey. They are in action against Montenegro the following Tuesday evening.
