Eriksson, Canucks share Panthers 6th straight loss, 5-1

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) – Loui Eriksson had a goal and two assists when Vancouver Canucks defeated the Florida Panthers on Sunday, 5-1.

Ben Hutton, Markus Granlund, Brock Boeser and Jay Beagle also scored for Vancouver. Jacob Markstrom stopped 23 shots.

Frank Vatrano scored for the Panthers, who lost six consecutive riders. Roberto Luongo had 31 saves.

Despite playing for the visitors, Luongo, the former Canucks netminder, received raw cheers from "Louuuu!" out of the crowd every time he stopped the puck.

Vancouver controlled the game from the start and kept the Panthers spelled for long distances on their own ends.

Eriksson opened the score 12:32 in the second period. The left wing eliminated a pass from Mike Hoffman at the blue line of the Panthers and drove into the attacking zone. He defeated Luongo with a wrist shot for his eighth goal of the year.

The Panthers reacted early in the third, just when Nikolay Goldobin was eliminated from Vancouver after a hooking penalty.

With the help of a screen from former Canucks player Jared McCann, Vatrano scored on a backhanded shot by Markstrom that tied the game.

Hutton scored less than two minutes later and shot past Luongo. It was the first goal of the defender of Vancouver in 30 games.

Boeser scored on an empty net after Luongo was drawn with 2:27 left in the game. Eriksson was credited with an assist.

He added another assist when Beagle scored an empty-net goal with another 38 seconds left.

Granlund finished the score and sent a shot along Luongo with 11 seconds left.

COMMENTS: Canucks fans have shown that they had not forgotten what happened when the teams last played in mid-October. The Florida matchup saw Panthers defender Mike Matheson hit Elias Pettersson and threw him to the ice. The rookie-star of the Canucks left the race and was sidelined for two weeks with a concussion. There was no penalty at stake, but the league later moved Matheson for two games. But it was Panther's center Michael Haley who dropped the gloves with Canuck's defender Erik Gudbranson. Officials let the couple swing for a few minutes before Gudbranson fell on the ice. Both gave five minutes of punishment for fighting.
