ERIK ten Hag has backed ‘class’ Mason Mount to be a key player for Manchester United as they bid to finish the season with silverware.
Mount, who joined United ahead of Liverpool last summer for £60m, is pushing to feature in Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final between the two teams at Old Trafford.
The England midfielder has been hampered by injury since arriving at Old Trafford, with his latest calf problem keeping him out for four months.
But speaking ahead of the bitter clash against Liverpool, Ten Hag has not lost confidence that his midfield signing will be of great influence in the match.
“I’m convinced he will be (a key player),” Ten Hag said.
Mason Mount could return from injury during Man United’s FA Cup clash against Liverpool
Erik ten Hag has backed the injured midfielder to be a key part of the Red Devils’ silver medal bid this season.
‘He did not have the opportunity to prove this point. But he will be a very good player for Manchester United.
“It’s been really unfortunate and disappointing for him, but also for us, when you have such a classy player in the middle and you can’t play with him.” He has had injuries as we all know.
“He didn’t have time to get into the rhythm, but I’m sure that when he’s fit and plays and gets into that rhythm, he’ll contribute to Manchester United’s success, I’m sure.”
Mount has enjoyed a full week of training and went into Saturday’s final session fighting to make Sunday’s matchday squad.
So far this season, he has only made 12 appearances.
Ten Hag was asked if Sunday is a season-saving game for United, who are on the outside looking in trying to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
The Englishman has enjoyed a full week of training with the first team, after not playing since November
There is a strong possibility that he will be included in the team that will play Liverpool in the FA Cup.
‘We have to save the season!’ The Dutchman said.
“We know we have to catch up in the Premier League, but now we have the opportunity to win titles.
“The only chance is the FA Cup, so we are only three wins away.
‘There are big games ahead and we have to play the best we can. Sunday is a test for us, but we like tests, we like challenges and we can, to a certain extent, be relaxed because we believe in ourselves. On Sunday we have to prove it.’
