Erik ten Hag admits he will miss the support of director of football John Murtough but insists he has a “perfect” relationship with new investors INEOS.

Murtough was instrumental in bringing Ten Hag to Old Trafford from Ajax in the summer of 2022 and has been a key ally during the Dutchman’s two seasons in English football.

The 50-year-old resigned earlier this week with INEOS in the process of installing Dan Ashworth as director of football and Jason Wilcox as technical director.

Ten Hag urged Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his sporting director Sir Dave Brailsford to name a replacement for Murtough as soon as possible as he continues to prepare for the summer transfer window despite speculation over his future.

“I think it’s very important that the new owner is working on this, to replace his role, to start a new season,” the United manager said. ‘At the moment, of course, I miss his support. “He has moved on, we worked very well together and I thank John and wish him all the best for the future.”

It is unclear whether new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe (R) will look to transfer the Dutchman at the end of the season.

However, rather than feel exposed, Ten Hag says he has a good relationship with INEOS and Brailsford, who has been a key figure in the changes being made under the Ratcliffe government.

“No, in my case, as I said before, I work very well with the new owners, in close collaboration,” added Ten Hag. ‘This doesn’t change the way I work here: perfect, still perfect. “I’m happy with that, but we want to set the right conditions to be successful.”
