There were also suggestions that Barcelona wanted to sign Bailly, but a deal did not materialize.
While United managed to secure a deal for Bailly, Mourinho had recently been appointed as manager of the club and tried to bolster his defense.
Bailly told Mundo Deportivo: ‘In the summer of 2016 there were many rumors.
‘I was in Ivory Coast, at home in the dining room with my mother, when the phone rang. It was a Portuguese song; Mourinho.
‘He told me to go with him, that he liked me since he saw me with Espanyol and Villarreal.

Manchester City was also interested, but when Mourinho calls you, you can’t say no.
‘You can’t say no to Barca either. It just didn’t happen because the interest was not public or that explicit. ‘
Bailly won the Europa League and League Cup in his first season with United, but he has endured many setbacks during his time at the club with injuries.
For example, this season, Bailly has only played four games and is currently sidelined with a muscle injury. He also missed many games last season after undergoing knee surgery.
In total, Bailly played 89 times for United, but he has been prevented from having an extended run in the squad for a while.
