An enraged father strangled his 17-year-old daughter to death in her sleep in India when he found out she was pregnant after rape.
The girl, who came from the village of Mantoli in the northeastern state of Uttarakhand in India, was murdered by her father to maintain ‘family honor’, police say, suspecting the girl had been raped.
The girl lived with her grandparents, who discovered the pregnancy while accompanying her on a hospital visit last week.
They informed the father who later turned up in anger at the grandparents’ house, but left shortly after. At five in the morning he returned home and strangled the girl while she was sleeping.

After the murder, the father told villagers the next morning that the teenager had committed suicide and had already buried her.
“The hospital informed us on Tuesday that a teenage girl was pregnant,” Suneeta, Kapkot’s circle officer, told the Times of India.
So it could be a case under POSCO law. But when we inquired the next day, we found out that the girl was already dead and buried. ‘
On Thursday, officers dug up the body and interviewed the grandparents.
“We took the DNA sample from the fetus and investigated who raped the girl,” said Suneeta.
“The investigation is ongoing and the perpetrators will be caught soon.”
The brutal murder comes just two weeks after a 14-year-old girl fighting two rapists was burned to death when her attackers became enraged at her resistance.
The high school student was admitted to a hospital in Raipur with burns covering 80 percent of her body. She told police the identities of her attackers on her death bed.
Earlier last month, the raped body of a four-year-old girl was dumped in a well after she was raped and murdered in the same city of Chhatarpur.
According to the latest available official figures, there were approximately 40,000 rapes in India in 2016.
In 2018, the Indian government nodded under public pressure and approved the death penalty for repeat offenders and those raping children under the age of 12.
Activists claim the 40,000 number is just the tip of the iceberg, as many victims fear reporting crimes due to threats from perpetrators or the social stigma attached to sexual assaults.
Before the coronavirus outbreak, a series of violent sex attacks sparked outrage and nationwide protests.
