England seeks to build on a bright day three as it will face India in the second Test in the Lord. Chris Woakes scored a victory in the Testing Century and Jonny Bairstow added 93 when the hosts reached 357-6 to open an important 250-race lead over India.

Arriving at the double with England 131-5, Woakes – back in the team as a replacement for Ben Stokes – scored freely in a partnership of 189 with Bairstow, bringing out his century with a pull for three.

Bairstow seemed willing to join him to get his name on the Lords honors badge, but the Yorkshireman fell by 93, trapped excellently by goalkeeper Dinesh Karthik after he punctured Hardik Pandya.

Woakes, who finished the day unbeaten in 120, reached 18 limits at the cricket house and joined in the fold for the effervescent young Sam Curran (22 outside) who again seemed confident after impressing with bat and ball in the test opening in Edgbaston.

After the rain faded on the first day of play and interrupted much of day two, the bad light put an end to the proceedings with England in a dominant position.

Previously, England had reached a record of 89-4 in response to the first 107 entries from India, and the hosts' most important order failed to impress.

In the eighth episode, Keaton Jennings missed a direct throw from Mohammed Shami and was caught lbw by 11.

On the next pass, Alastair Cook (21) was caught after receiving a delivery of Ishant Sharma, which made the debutant Ollie Pope, 20, stay in line.

The right one played some positive hits and scored quickly while looking to rebuild with Captain Joe Root, but as lunch approached, Pandya caught him.

Root was attentive during most of his tickets until his dismissal by Shami lbw for 19 of 53 balls marked the break.

Jos Buttler was the only one who fell in an afternoon session dominated by the hosts, caught by a breeze of 24 victories by the impressive Shami who claimed three terrains.

Thereafter, Bairstow and Woakes dominated a dejected attack by India with England scoring nearly four and a half hours on a positive hitting spot.
