Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon appears to have avoided a serious injury following fears he seriously damaged his knee against Chelsea on Monday.

sport mail It is his understanding that the 23-year-old has not experienced any swelling or adverse reactions since then and, provided there are no setbacks, could even return to training in the coming days.

That would put Gordon in contention for a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad, which will be named on Thursday, and Three Lions bosses have contacted Newcastle for an update on his fitness.

Gordon was forced off in the first half at Stamford Bridge, against Southgate, after feeling pain in his left knee and Eddie Howe said afterwards that he “didn’t look good”. That raised fears that his season might be over.

However, the early signs are good and while the next 48 hours will be informative about his immediate availability, there is a belief that he has cleared himself of a long-term problem.
