Sam Johnstone was left out of West Bromwich Albion’s roster for Wednesday’s 2-0 home defeat to Preston amid suggestions he disagrees with manager Valerien Ismael.

The England international was not included in the squad despite his availability, as Ismael chose David Button in goal with young Alex Palmer on the bench.

The exact reasons for Johnstone’s bans were unclear as he had been suspended and was not believed to be suffering from injury or illness.

Johnstone has made 26 Championship appearances for Albion this season after being left on the bench for the first game of the season. He was sent off in a 2-2 draw with Cardiff on January 2, meaning a three-game suspension. Button took over in his absence.

Albion is desperately looking for Johnstone, whose contract expires in the summer, to sign a new contract to avoid losing him on a free transfer in the summer, but this has yet to happen. Johnstone would now be free to discuss terms with foreign clubs.

Johnstone has three full caps for England and was given the West Ham court last summer. His exclusion from the Preston game is thought to have left teammates stunned.
