EXCLUSIVE: ‘Sterling and Walker ALWAYS argue over who’s fastest’: Gareth Southgate gossips about his England squad, the best goal his team has scored and which ex-captain was his childhood hero
Gareth Southgate has thrown the dirt on his England side just days before the start of Euro 2020 as the Three Lions boss answered questions from an audience of young fans in St George’s Park.
The youngsters from Heath Fields primary school had the chance to ask Southgate a series of questions in the conference room at the home of English football, and the 50-year-old gave them a peek behind the curtain at the group chasing glory this month.
A young fan asked Southgate which player was the fastest on his team, but the former centre-back revealed that the subject is always up for debate when it comes to who is the fastest.

‘It would probably be Kyle Walker and Raheem’ [Sterling]’, Southgate told the kids as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations of Pokemon, who are partnering with English football. “They argue all the time about who is the fastest.”
While happy to laugh at Walker and Sterling’s bickering, Southgate also revealed how when the time for laughter and jokes is over, his team-mates are there for each other with team chemistry at a record high going into the European Championship.
When asked who was the most supportive and caring player on the team, Southgate revealed: “So our captain Harry [Kane] would be one of those people. Jordan Henderson is very good at that.

“When you’re young, you might think older people don’t get nervous, but actually they are. So it would take time to put people at ease.’
While it was a milestone for the Japanese company, it has also been 25 years since Southgate made his full-length debut in England, helping Terry Venables’ men to a 1-0 win over Bulgaria at Wembley in 1996.
But while Southgate’s debut came a quarter of a century ago, he had to think further back when asked who his childhood hero was.
“My favorite player growing up was Bryan Robson,” Southgate revealed. “And he was the captain of Manchester United, but you’ve probably never heard of him, right? You’re all too young to remember!’

Fast forward to recent times and Southgate was pushed for what was his favorite England goal as manager of the national side.
While the Three Lions have scored some spectacular attacks under his leadership, it was a bull’s-eye during the 2018 World Cup that Southgate was pleased with.
The goal in question was England’s third, and John Stones’ second, against Panama in the 6-1 thrashing at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, where five players teamed up to completely outsmart the opposition in the group stage.

“When we played Panama at the World Cup (in 2018), there was a free kick that the players had talked about, and it worked perfectly and we scored from that,” Southgate said when asked about his favorite goal.
“It was wonderful to see how excited they were to try this free kick and it worked.”
