Energetic mother dies after misdiagnosis of sinusitis turns out to be aggressive cancer

A vibrant mother tragically passed away three years after initially complaining of a sore nose, which was misdiagnosed as sinusitis. Katie Froggatt began experiencing nasal pain in June 2021, according to the Echo of LiverpoolThe Southport mother sought medical attention and doctors initially attributed her condition to sinusitis.

However, months later, she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of sinus cancer and underwent surgery to remove her nose. Despite her tireless battle with the disease and efforts to raise funds for treatment in the US, Katie passed away on Friday 28 June, aged 40. Katie is survived by her husband Ste and daughter Myla. Her loved ones described her as the “jolliest person you will ever meet”.

Her best friend Nicola Patterson previously told Echo“In early June 2021, she was complaining of what she thought was sinusitis. She was prescribed antibiotics, but it turned out to be sinus cancer. From June to December, she was only prescribed antibiotics and thought she had polyps.”

Nicola continued: “In January last year, she was diagnosed with sinus cancer – an aggressive cancer – and had to have surgery to remove part of her nose. It has now returned despite having undergone major operations and radiotherapy. She was due to have her nose reconstructed but in September last year it came back. Then in December she had to have her nose removed. The cancer has now spread to her lungs. It’s terrible. She needs a prosthetic nose and is trialling another round of radiotherapy on her lungs.”

Katie, who was a hairdresser before her diagnosis in 2022, had to stop working while she received treatment. Despite more than a year of efforts to raise funds so Katie could travel to the United States for treatment, she tragically passed away surrounded by her loved ones.

Nicola, a close friend of Katie’s for 25 years, took to social media to pay tribute to her best friend. She wrote: “If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever. My heart is broken, I want you back already. You fought so hard right to the end, sleep tight bez.”

“Life will never be the same. Thank you for loving me as much as I love you. True soul sisters, our memories will live with me forever and help me get through the tough days. Keep thinking of your unforgettable laugh until we meet again. I promise we will take care of Ste and Myla, help them and the whole family too. Sleep tight.”
