A person “with a knife and hostile intent” was shot and killed Friday outside the entrance to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in San Diego.

The person was fatally shot by a military police officer at the entrance to Gate 5 after they exited their vehicle and disobeyed verbal orders to stop, MCRD officials reported.

“The base personnel gave verbal orders to stop the vehicle, after which the person exited their vehicle and approached with a knife and hostile intent,” said 1st Lt. Joshua Collins in a statement to Fox news.

The incident occurred around 11:50 a.m. Emergency services were called and pronounced the person dead at the scene at 12:16 p.m.

A red tarpaulin has been set up to block the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The person drove into the base where he has been standing at the gate since this afternoon with the license plate removed.

The entrance to Gate 5 at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Washington Street is listed as a civilian entrance.

The deadly situation is currently under investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, which has closed the area.

NCIS issued a statement saying, “Out of respect for the ongoing investigation process, we are unable to provide additional details at this time.”

Marine Corps Recruit Depot staff did not respond to DailyMail.com for comment.

The military base is located north of San Diego International Airport. It serves as a first training stop for enlisted recruits entering the United States Marine Corps on the West Coast.
