Emotional Collingwood coach Craig McRae breaks silence on Jordan De Goey, says ‘I just want to put my arms around him’

  • Jordan De Goey has been slapped with a $25,000 suspended fine by Collingwood
  • The 26-year-old was spotted in Bali last week with two women
  • The Magpies have reportedly withdrawn an extension offer for the midfielder
  • De Goey has taken personal leave and will not be available against GWS

Collingwood coach Craig McRae admitted he wants to get Jordan De Goey back on his team as soon as possible as the row over the midfielder’s antics in Bali continued.

The 26-year-old midfielder was sentenced to a $25,000 suspended fine this week after images surfaced of him dancing with two women in a nightlife on the Indonesian island last week.

The since-deleted video showed De Goey mimicking a sexual act with his tongue to the camera, as well as attempting to expose a woman’s chest as she lay on the bar.

The woman in question, Remy Jackson, then took to Instagram to defend the Magpies star, claiming she “couldn’t believe the reaction to Jordy and myself.”

On Thursday, McRae broke his silence on the incident, insisting he wanted to grab “his arms” De Goey, but acknowledged that the star of the problem was not yet in the frame of mind to return to football.

De Goey has not trained since his return from Bali on Sunday and will not be available for Pies’ game against GWS this weekend after personal leave.

“I can’t help but think I just want him back. I really want, I want to put my arms around him,” McRae said on SEN’s The Run Home

“I spoke to him yesterday and he is not able to go back to the football club at the moment, but I want him to come here.

“He has to go through a few things first and get into a space where he can, but it’s a safe place for him, our football club.”

The Bali incident is the latest entry in a growing list of off-field indiscretions involving De Goey, who spent a night in jail after being arrested in New York last October.

De Goey was charged with forcibly touching a 35-year-old woman and assaulting a 37-year-old man after his arrest in New York.

He was temporarily deposed by Collingwood until the former charges were dropped.

In January, the Pies reinstated him after agreeing to a plea deal to downgrade the remaining charges to second-degree harassment. After the incident, the club ordered De Goey to undergo an alcohol rehabilitation program, but it is clear that it did not prohibit him from going to nightclubs.

Earlier this week, The Age reported that Collingwood was beginning to worry about the prospect of signing a player with De Goey’s record to a long-term deal and withdrew the offer of a contract extension.

The midfielder will be a free agent at the end of the current season and the Magpies have reportedly offered him a two-year deal worth $800,000 per season, with an option for a further two years.

However, the offer was quickly withdrawn after De Goey flew back to Melbourne last weekend.

However, despite the fallout from the midfielder’s partying antics in Bali, McRae insisted the club remained fully behind De Goey.

“I want him to feel love and support,” he continued.

“I can’t help it, it’s in my DNA, love and support, not just him but all our players, step inside our four walls and let’s put our arms around him and help him move forward in this.”

Asked if he felt that De Goey will stay with Collingwood after the season ends, McRae replied: “I hope he finds a place where he can come back and be the best version of himself.

“I want to have an environment where all our players are better for when they come in and when they leave.

“Honestly, I don’t know when that is or when that is for me.”
