Emmerdale viewers wept during Friday’s all-male episode in which Dr. Liam Cavanagh revealed his past suicide attempt.
The GP’s shocking revelation came during a lockdown at the Woolpack pub in which some of the male villagers gathered in an attempt to help Paddy Kirk overcome his own mental health issues.
The character, played by Dominic Brunt, has been struggling with his mental health in the wake of his wife’s Chas affair and recent scenes saw him attempt to take his own life.
And when Paddy’s friends expressed fears that he might attempt suicide again, they were soon shocked when Liam confessed that he overdosed in medical school, admitting this in hopes of showing them that people can overcome their mental health battle.
The episode left viewers at home emotional with one admitting, “I may have started crying,” while others praised the “powerful” scenes that tackled the important issue of men’s mental health.

Liam told the pub: ‘What you said earlier is true. Some people who try to kill themselves try a second time, but many don’t… You should know.
He explained that during his studies to become a doctor, he was placed on suicide watch, with other students looking after him, adding that he had not talked about this in “a long time.”
Liam added: “I finished with a stomach pump but after that the guys in my corridor took turns making sure I wasn’t left alone.” They saved my life twice.
After Liam (Jonny McPherson) made his admission, the other lock-in attendees, including Marlon, Jimmy, Bob, Charles, Sam, Nate, and Bear, proceeded to open up about their own insecurities and struggles.
After sneaking downstairs and listening, Paddy went inside and joined his friends, which later led to emotional moments, including Cain (Jeff Hordley) comforting him with a hug as the vet opened up about his mental health issues.
He detailed being horrified to find the man who raised him dead by suicide and the “hate” he felt for what happened.
With his birth father Bear (Joshua Richards) telling him, ‘When I found out you were my son, it was the best thing that ever happened to me. And I am a grandfather and I love them both very much.
Meanwhile, Sam Dingle (James Hooton), in the spirit of opening up, dropped his pants for Dr. Cavanagh for an impromptu consultation after worrying about a lump on his testicle.
