Emma Raducanu’s agent insists the US Open champion is NOT distracted by her commercial interests

‘If she locked herself in her room and did nothing, it would be the same’: Emma Raducanu’s agent insists the US Open champion is NOT distracted by her commercial interests, claiming she suffered ‘a lot of bad luck’ in a ‘tough ‘ year

  • Emma Raducanu has had a rough time since she won the US Open Championship
  • Her US Open victory sparked massive interest from potential global sponsors
  • She is now a brand ambassador for nine companies, including HSBC and Nike
  • Her agent has downplayed the talk that this is having an impact on her tennis

Emma Raducanu’s agent has maintained that the US Open champion will not be distracted by her commercial interests, and that her performance would be the same without all her sponsorship shoots.

Her victory at the US Open last September sparked unprecedented interest and she is now a brand ambassador for nine companies, including Nike, HSBC, Evian and Tiffany & Co.

With that in the background, Raducanu has been struggling on the pitch since she picked up her first Grand Slam last year.

Her agent Max Eisenbud of IMG says that her commercial interests are not a reason for her problems this year.

He told the BBC sounds: ‘If she had zero shoot dates, everything would be the same. It’s been a tough year. It probably worked out, she’s had a lot of bad luck and what really hurt her was Covid (catching) and not having a great off-season, and then she was playing catch-up.

“But I think if she had zero shoot dates, everything would be the same.

“From the outside, I know you guys want to look at all those things — but if she locked herself in the room all year and didn’t do anything, I think it’d be the same.”

Eisenbud says this is his third professional experience with something “spectacular, special – and not normal.”

The other two were 17-year-old Maria Sharapova who defeated Serena Williams in the 2004 Wimbledon final, and Li Na was watched by an estimated 116 million Chinese viewers as she captured her first Grand Slam title at the 2011 French Open.

American agent Eisenbud made a calendar for Sharapova, in which he crossed out all the weeks before, during and immediately after tournaments where she would not do commercial work.

Together with her father, Yuri, they discovered that she could give 18 days a year to sponsors who had no influence on her training or tournament schedule.

It was an approach by Li and now it is a model endorsed by Raducanu.

Eisenbud said, “Again with the same philosophy,” Eisenbud continued. “Never a week or so before a tournament, never in a tournament week, and never right after the tournament.

“I understand how people who don’t understand that philosophy might think it distracts it, but I think when you see how it’s laid out, it really isn’t.”

“Emma has decided that she would like to start her shoots at 12 noon or 1 p.m. and go until 8 or 9 p.m. and have the opportunity in the morning to work out or work out or do fitness.

‘Not all the days of the 18 have been used. There are sponsors who have those days, but many don’t use them.

“I can imagine that by the end of the year the number of days she uses will be around 13.

“But when the 19th day comes, and it’s millions of dollars and you have to say ‘no’ because you are faithful to the 18 days.”

Raducanu is currently preparing for Wimbledon, where she will compete in the draw, despite her recent trouble with a side injury.

Raducanu was not ready to return for the WTA tournament in Eastbourne, but has been practicing at the All England Club this week.

However, the British number 1 team does not take anything for granted and will be watching her closely for the next few days before making a final decision.
