‘She is a big fan of Emma’s work, especially in The Crown, where Emma played Princess Diana.
“Dolly is also very progressive and forward-thinking, so she thinks having a non-binary star in the role would be a brilliant decision.”
And a sign of Dolly’s forward-thinking is her decision to cast Emma in the lead role.
Emma, who is currently working on the queer feminist retelling of The 1001 Arabian Nights, came out as non-binary in 2021 and uses they/them pronouns.
At the time, the actor said he felt “more seen” when he was referred to as “they,” before revealing that he wanted to embrace femininity and masculinity rather than choosing one or the other.
They added that they still loved the whole feminine part of them, but wanted to explore the new part that was masculine and non-binary.
Emma’s casting in the lead role comes after Keira Knightly played the title character in the Regency-era project in 2007 alongside Matthew MAcfadyen.
According the sunNetflix wants to move production on the series after its successful adaptation of Persuasion, starring Dakota Johnson as Anne Eliott.
Dolly is a big fan of Emma’s work and believes that having a non-binary star in the lead role will modernize the story and move forward from Keira’s iconic performance.
The BBC is also adapting the novel for a limited series. Titled, The Other Bennet Sister, it will focus on the often overlooked character of Mary.
The news comes as Emma has been working on her new project, 100 Nights of Heroes, and was spotted with co-star Maika Monroe on set.
Emma and Maika’s latest project is a feminist version of The 1001 Nights, or The Arabian Nights, and follows a charming guest played by Nicholas Galitzine, who arrives at a remote castle and meets a neglectful husband, his innocent bride Cherry ( Maika), and her devoted maid Hero (Emma).
The film, based on the graphic novel of the same name by Isabel Greenberg, sees Nicolas play a lecherous villain who arrives at his friends’ house and bets that he can seduce his wife Cherry in 100 days.
But Cherry knows his plans and, with the help of her lover and maid Hero, tells a series of captivating stories to distract the villain from his cruel intentions.
The film will also star Peaky Blinders star Michael Keogh and singer Charli XCX in her first major film role.
