As for which celebrity tops your list when it comes to emulating beauty?
“Salma Hayek is on my beauty moodboard, she is young and current,” Emily confessed. ‘I think she looks amazing. She is aging very gracefully, which is nice because that doesn’t happen that often.”
Beauty has always been a big part of the New Yorker’s life from an early age, although it did not always manifest itself as she imagined.
“When I was younger, I was definitely interested in beauty, but that doesn’t mean I was good at it,” Emily said. ‘I played with makeup, I plucked my eyebrows too much, I put sparkles in places on my face that didn’t belong…’
Nowadays, making fashion and glamor a full-time job has been a dream come true for the mother of one.
“It’s really amazing to work in an industry where you can work with creative people who care so much about beauty and have found ways to express themselves through it,” Emily reflected. “I think growing up, I’ve been able to find things that I like and learn things from these amazing people. Knowing what works for me is very inspiring and makes me feel very confident. That’s my signature.

But from time to time the runway model changes up her routine, which may include a different hairstyle for a night out on the town.
“I change things when there is a change in how I feel about myself,” the influencer explained. “And then when I come to, I get over that experience and I like to feel like myself again.”
“I love wigs,” Emily continued. ‘I’m never shy about wigs. Marc Jacobs (show) was a really funny moment because everyone thought he cut my hair, but that wasn’t the case at all. But let me tell you how it was at one point that night that I came out and was a completely different person. I think that’s the fun thing about beauty: trying on different hats. Literally. Sometimes it’s a wig.

Nowadays, the star can wear a hairpiece without changing her normal locks, but she’s also dabbled in being her own hairstylist over the years.
“I like to experiment with beauty too,” Emily said. ‘The scissors thing has been a lifelong issue for me, I’ve been cutting different strands of my hair since I was about nine years old, sometimes with more success than others. I actually cut my bangs this morning with my stylist, so it’s clearly not over. I love it.’
Meanwhile, navigating beauty as a feminist isn’t as difficult as you might think.
“I don’t care anymore,” Emily stated. ‘I used to really try to play a role based on the space I was entering. If she tried to be sexually attractive, she would wear a lot of makeup. If I wanted to be taken seriously by an academic group, I would dress less, and that applied to the way I dressed as well. I think I don’t give a shit now.’
The 33-year-old shared: ‘I feel most beautiful when I come off a really good holiday. I’m tanned and I’m happy
He added: “I just don’t care much about people’s perception of me.” This is who I am and they will find out and if they don’t, it’s up to them.”
In addition to not paying attention to what others may say, Emily likes other practices that bring her peace.
“Skincare has become a really good thing for me,” she recalled. ‘In the last six months, I decided to really care about my skin and care for it in a different way than in the past. Plus, putting on makeup in the morning is a form of meditation. I don’t look at my phone. I’m so disconnected. And it’s so relaxing, it’s the same feeling you get when you watch makeup tutorials. And it’s just my time for myself.’
The author commented about being a feminist while also loving beauty: ‘I just don’t care that much about people’s perception of me. This is who I am and they will find out and if they don’t, that’s on them.
And Emily will likely return to the Big Apple feeling better than ever after her European getaway.
“I feel more beautiful when I come from a really good vacation,” she joked. “I’m tanned and I’m happy.”
