The original film debuted in 1992, starring Estevez’s character, Gordon Bombay, a lawyer arrested for drunk driving and a sentence of 500 hours of community service.

He is ordered to coach a ragtag hockey team known as The Mighty Ducks while leading them to greatness.

Estevez returned as Bombay in 1994’s D2: The Mighty Ducks and 1996’s D3: The Mighty Ducks, although he still doesn’t usually respond well to sequels.

Over the years, there have been many reunions, whether through the Anaheim Ducks or through various charities. I’ve been known to turn them all down, whether it’s a Breakfast Club reunion or The Outsiders or St. Elmo’s Fire of Young Guns, all of them, ”said Estevez.

‘Luckily I’ve been able to play in movies that have stood the test of time and have a long shelf life, so a lot of people wanted to see reunions where they are now,’ he added.

So on the one hand it’s a blessing to have been involved in that, but on the other it’s like I rarely, if ever, participate. So coming back for a Mighty Ducks reunion with reprising this role was a big step, ” Estevez continued.

Estevez reunited with original Mighty Ducks writer Steven Brill for the new series, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, which came together during the filming of their 2018 movie The Public, which Brill wrote and directed.

‘While I was doing The Public, I just wasn’t worried about it. I didn’t really know where they were going with Bombay, I thought we’d finished it, ”Estevez added.

Steven and the writers started talking to me about the idea that Bombay is in hiding, that hockey hasn’t been good for him over the decades, that he’s a guy who lives on the outskirts of the city and isn’t really engaging. with people, ”Estevez continued.

‘He is not married. He has no children. He’s a bit of a mystery in terms of where he’s been. But it wasn’t a good place; it was a much darker place than the last time we saw Bombay. And that appealed to me, ‘he added.

Estevez added that Bombay is “trying to keep the ice palace together with duct tape and prayer.”

‘The fact that we would visit this man again, but so different from the last time we saw him? It is certainly not what we expect. But what I like is that there are 10 episodes that we had to find out where he’s been and eventually where he’s going, ” he added.

The second episode of The Mighty Ducks: Game Changer, titled Dusters, will debut on Disney Plus Friday, April 1.
