Elton John’s guitarist Davey Johnstone says vitamins and herbal tea are order of business on tour

‘Touring is going to be hard on your body’: Elton John’s guitarist Davey Johnstone, 71, says vitamins and herbal teas are the order of the day for the 75-year-old singer as he performs Farewell Yellow Brick Road gigs

Elton John’s guitarist has talked about the days of boozing and taking drugs while on tour, his long gong and the vitamins and herbal teas that keep him going.

The singer, 75, is currently on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour and his guitarist Davey Johnstone talked about how traveling for gigs is “hard business” when you’re older.

Speak with the mirror, he said, ‘I take tons of vitamins. Tons of vitamin C, turmeric, primrose and lots of probiotics. I also take a lot of my own tea on the go, I try to eat healthy.

‘I drink healthy tea, it would be great for your system. It tastes like s*** but it seems to work. Touring is a difficult profession. Elton is 75 and I just turned 71, it’s going to be tough on your body.’

Davey added that both he and Elton are ready to retire after decades in the music business.

He said: ‘Next year around this time we’ll be doing our very last shows, smaller arena shows and frankly we’re both ready. Elton is ready for the same reason.

“You can’t keep doing it forever. It’s a job for guys in their twenties and thirties.’

Last month, Elton confirmed he was ready to return to work on his tour after taking a break to recover from an “uncomfortable fall.”

He took to Instagram to reveal that he will be taking the stage again after a ‘quiet break at home’ to conclude his long string of farewell shows.

He wrote: ‘After a restful break at home, I’m ready to hit the road again with my Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour!

“I’m wearing my Walk Of Fame sunglasses from the Elton John Eyewear collection. Additionally, Walmart is committed to donating $1 million annually to the Elton John AIDS Foundation. They are available exclusively at Walmart and Sam’s Club.”

He was also seen in a wheelchair when he arrived at Leipzig airport earlier this month, before heading home to Nice.

Davey first joined The Elton John Band in 1971, with the group performing 3,800 times over the years.

When a key member of the band is hit by Covid, a concert threatens to be cancelled.

Elton is in a Covid bubble with his security guard, driver and hairdresser, while Davey is in another with The Elton John Band.

Davey talked about how members of the band try not to interact with each other when they’re not on stage, to keep things running smoothly.

Elton has been sober since 1990 after a cocaine addiction while Davey no longer drinks either.

Although he will soon stop touring, Davey insisted that Elton is still the same as when he first met him, calling him a “special individual.”

Elton’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour began in 2018 and is expected to end in July 2023 with a performance in Stockholm, Sweden.
