DeGeneres admitted that throughout her career she was forced to “worry about what people think” as a way of measuring her success.

“If they like you, you’re in, and if they don’t, you’re out. I’ve spent my whole life trying to make people happy and I’ve cared too much about what other people think of me,” she said.

“The idea that someone would think I was bad devastated me and consumed me for a long time. After a lifetime of caring about others, I can’t take it anymore, so I don’t do it,” she said.

He ended each episode by saying, “Be nice to each other,” joking in the special, “If I had ended my show by saying, ‘Fuck you,’ people would have been pleasantly surprised,” referring to the toxic workplace and “bad” accusations.
