A white lab coat once owned by the disgraced founder of Theranos, Elizabeth Holmes, is up for sale for a whopping $17,000.

The garment, which is embroidered with the logo of the now-defunct blood-testing company, is being sold byr ‘@sweetsirensongs’ on the Poshmark website.

Billed as ‘a piece of biotech history’, the jacket is getting a lot of attention online as interest in Holmes continues to grow as she awaits her fraud trial.

“I’m not surprised, Elizabeth Holmes was a very inspiring person,” PR guru Mark Macias told me. CNBC of the expensive lab coat.

“She was the youngest female billionaire, self-made entrepreneur and even though we found out it was fraud, she sold something revolutionary.”

Holmes founded Theranos in the mid-2000s after dropping out of Stanford University. She was heralded as a child prodigy after she claimed her company would revolutionize modern medicine by performing rapid blood tests with a portable automated device.

The blonde businesswoman raised more than $700 million from investors, before the company collapsed in 2018 when it was revealed that no such technology existed.

Holmes now faces 20 years behind bars after being indicted on two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and nine counts of wire fraud.

Her 13-week trial has been postponed, pending the birth of her first child next month.

The scandal has made Holmes a pop culture sensation, with her story told in an HBO documentary and a bestseller titled Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley start-up.

Holmes’ deep voice and distinctive blond hair—as well as her signature uniform consisting of a black turtleneck sweater and white lab coat—only added to her intrigue.

While some are genuinely interested in buying the lab coat as a piece of pop culture history, a plethora of ironic merchandise has emerged that pokes fun at Holmes and her failed venture.

In recent months, Etsy has started stocking mugs, shirts, and face masks bearing the Holmes name as she takes on something of a cult following.

A fake ‘Theranos-Early Investor’ mug sells for $17, while a shirt decorated with her face and the phrase ‘fake it ’til you make it’ fetch $12.55

Another $15 coffee cup contains the ironic phrase, “Elizabeth Holmes is my #Girlboss.” A face mask in the same design sells for $13.25.

Some youngsters have even started posing with the ironic merchandise on their TikTok accounts amid a backlash against “girlboss feminism.”

Girlboss feminism was a term coined in the mid-2000s to describe many prominent female businesswomen, including Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and the founder of The Wing, Audrey Gelman.

In recent months, the reputations of both women have come under fire after their companies were criticized for their moral doubts.

Earlier this week, Vox published an article entitled ‘The Death of The Girlboss’, which read: ‘The girlboss is one of the cruelest tricks capitalism has ever committed….
In the context of girl bosses, putting these women in positions of power would never go against the capitalist and patriarchal system, because it was never meant to be changed – just use it.”

However, the interest in and mockery of Holmes predates the recent collapse of the girl boss feminism.

Just before Halloween 2019, stores in San Francisco reported that the black turtlenecks sold out after thousands of women dressed up as Holmes sparked a rush for the items.
