Elizabeth Claire Nguyen, 25, struggles with severe acne, reveals how she cleaned up her skin

A young high school teacher who suffered from severe cystic acne has revealed how she cleared up her skin after changing her diet and skincare regimen.

Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Claire Nguyen, of Sydney, started getting mild breakouts in her teens – but she noticed her skin was deteriorating in her early 20s.

The 25-year-old said multiple doctors and dermatologists would simply offer her “patch solutions” such as antibiotics and birth control, which would make her acne so inflamed that she couldn’t rest her face on a pillow without being in pain.

Despite her excruciating struggle of six years, Liz managed to transform her skin in just a few months without using roaccutane – all while sharing the ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos that showed her complexion noticeably brighter.

Liz’s three-step skincare regimen

1. Toner/serum: This one is interesting because it is a two-in-one toner and serum. I use two to three drops

2. Moisturizer: The amount is slightly larger than a blueberry as I use it on my face and neck. Don’t forget your neck, make sure to massage in an upward motion

3. Sunscreen: Use the two-finger rule and apply it all over the face. I also use a tinted SPF which is great

But long before she found a solution, the English teacher said she struggled for years after the “little bumps” she developed during puberty grew into severe cystic nodules that eventually caused permanent indentations in her cheeks and forehead.

“Every morning I had a hard time getting up because that just made me stare in the mirror to see a monster. Washing my face made me feel all the big sore bumps on my cheeks and forehead,” Liz told Daily Mail Australia.

“I had big, painful pockets of pus under my skin and couldn’t sleep on my face because it would be so inflamed. I wasn’t myself anymore… I became a quiet and depressed girl who wasn’t fun anymore.’

And much to her frustration, the prescription drugs she received for six agonizing years did little to clear up her sore and swollen spots.

With the “ongoing stress” from high school to college, Liz said she found her worst flare-up when she was given multiple courses of antibiotics and hormonal birth control pills.

“I’ve had so many dermatologists and doctors look at my skin for a few seconds and immediately tell me they want to prescribe antibiotics,” she recalls.

“They just gave me ‘patch solutions’ which caused some side effects.”

After desperately trying everything to treat her blemishes, she began to do her own research, working with an herbalist, acupuncturist, and naturopath.

‘I realized that my acne was caused by internal imbalances. My liver and gut needed so much more support than I realized,” she said.

“It wasn’t just stress that caused my acne, poor diet and sleep deprivation, but also the overreliance on antibiotics and birth control pills in my years of many mistakes.

At her worst, Liz said she was no longer a “bubbly, fun, loving” girl.

“The worst part wasn’t that other people called me names like ‘pizza face’, ‘strawberry face’, ‘greasy greasy pan’ or ‘ugly’…it was the self-loathing,” she recalls.

“I became so toxic that I lost my self-esteem and at some point I really believed I didn’t deserve to be loved.”

She was able to banish the active acne by using 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide lotion that is available in any pharmacy without a prescription.

But Liz said she realized her skin problems were “deeper than that” and her acne eventually returned “in full force.”

“It was painful and all over my face. I realized that topical treatments couldn’t do much,” she said.

It wasn’t until Liz made some lifestyle changes, such as taking Chinese herbal remedies and following a healthier diet, that her skin finally recovered for good.

“The best thing that helped me was taking natural Chinese herbal tablets for two to three months to detox, along with a healthier diet without excessive sugar and dairy consumption,” she said.

‘I exercised more, slept enough hours and made sure my body was sufficiently hydrated. I also believe that having a positive attitude helped lower my stress hormones and aided in the healing process.”

She started seeing results within weeks of taking Zilch, a 100 percent natural supplement made up only of 17 powerful herbal ingredients from Chinese medicine, developed by Australian physician Vivian Tam.

“In a world so focused on outer beauty, I wanted to destroy society’s perception of beauty because it’s too often associated with unrealistic unattainable standards,” she said.

‘Not just for myself, but also for everyone else in the world. I wanted to show the world acne in a different light. This acne positivity movement will only get bigger and better from now on.”
