- Two other vehicles had started the female elephant by racing down the road in Amboseli National Park
- The dramatic images were taken by 43-year-old Mwangi Kirubi, who was in another car waiting to take pictures
Dramatic photos show the moment when a huge elephant chased a car after being startled by motor vehicles hurtling down a road in Kenya.
The gigantic female elephant towered over the car and seemed ready to trample it before the driver pulled away, after another motorist alerted the animal by racing down the rural road.
The scene was captured on camera by 43-year-old Mwangi Kirubi, waiting in a car to take pictures in Amboseli National Park when two other vehicles rushed past him.
That prompted the matriarch of the herd to approach a fourth car where some of Mwangi’s fellow photographers were waiting – forcing them to flee.

Mwangi, from Nairobi, was camping in the national park when he saw the dramatic scene unfold.
“We were split into two groups and were in two cars,” he said. We sat peacefully enjoying the company of the elephants until two other vehicles came running towards us and honking that we had to make way for them.
‘I have no idea where they were going, but they were in a hurry and ignored 40 km / h [25mph] speed limit of the park.
‘I didn’t think it had agitated the elephants too much until I saw from my car the herd’s matriarch approach the other car, which contained and threatened to attack the other photographers.
‘This is when I decided to take the series of photos. I couldn’t believe my eyes, the elephant was huge compared to the car. ‘
Mwangi says the elephant could have easily trampled the car, but the driver was quick to get off the elephant and drive to safety.
The photographer added: ‘The elephant chased the car as it drove away, expressing her disgust at the nuisance caused by the passing cars.
“Fortunately, we all returned to camp alive, with nothing more than a scare and a great campfire story.”
