Electric cars may show green number plates from next week: from December 8, government incentives to promote battery vehicles will start
- License plates with green flash on the left can be used on new and existing EVs
- They will help authorities identify zero-emission petrol and diesel cars
- Municipalities could then introduce incentives, such as cheaper parking in cities
Zero-emission electric cars will be able to wear green license plates starting Tuesday, December 8 as part of the government’s effort to boost sales of battery vehicles.
The special license plates – flashing green on one side – can be used on new and existing fully electric cars from next week to distinguish them from combustion engine engines.
By simply identifying zero-emission vehicles, Transportation Secretary Grant Shapps said it will “ help local authorities design and implement new policies to incentivize people to own and drive them. ”
While no further details have been revealed yet, it could open the door for electric vehicles to receive special privileges, such as access to bus lanes and parking in city and city centers.
Green light: electric cars, new and old, may show number plates with flashes of green light from next week
The British Number Plate Manufacturers Association confirmed the imminent arrival of the green number plates.
The Ministry of Transport and the Office for Low-Emission Vehicles have given the green light for the use of the license plates from December 8 and that they can be retrofitted to existing electric cars, as long as they have no CO2 emissions.
In June, Shapps said the special license plates would help the government “drive a green economic recovery” and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
He suggested that drivers could benefit from local initiatives such as cheaper parking and free access to zero-emission zones where people with green number plates are recognized as eligible.
The plates are recognizable by a green flash on the left – the chosen design from three options put forward last year.
The Secretary of Transportation said: ‘A green recovery is key to helping us meet our net zero carbon commitments while driving economic growth.
Green license plates can unlock a number of incentives for drivers and raise awareness of cleaner vehicles on our roads, showing people that a greener transportation future is within our reach.
“We support small businesses in developing the transport technology of the future by investing millions of euros to keep UK businesses at the forefront of low-carbon innovation and research.”
The number plates will help local authorities identify zero-emission electric cars to implement future privileges for drivers of these clean vehicles
Reports have suggested that zero-emission EVs with the license plates can access cheaper parking spaces in city centers and also use bus lanes
While Shapps, the owner of a Tesla Model 3 electric car, has itself backed the arrival of the license plates, auto industry insiders have questioned the impact of the incentive.
The RAC said the license plates could become an “ badge of honor ” for some drivers and stir resentment among existing drivers of gasoline and diesel vehicles.
Edmund King, AA president, said he supported the concept by revealing that a survey of thousands of members found that just over a third supported the plan to differentiate electric vehicles from conventional cars.
