An eight-year-old chihuahua resisted the attack of a mountain lion as he walked with his owner on a Colorado trail.

Laurie Cullum was walking with Spits on a Durango road they frequented on August 28 when she heard her dog crying.

When he turned around, Cullum discovered that his dog was covered in blood and noticed that a mountain lion was escaping.

"I had to make a decision right there," Cullum told 9News. & # 39; Will you be able to live like this? Or can I try to save his life?

Cullum worked to quickly stop the bleeding and took the dog to the Durango Animal Hospital, where it was attended by Dr. Charles Hawman.

"The vet thought he had a chance and took him home for 2 nights in a row to take care of him throughout the night," Cullum added.

Spits suffered puncture wounds in the neck and head. They went through the breast and the inner ear channels, which caused some balance problems.

The dog is now also blind in one eye after surviving the attack.

"It's not the same dog sure, but now he's alive and walks in a straight line," Cullum explained. "Initially, the first week, I could only walk in circles."

It is unknown how long it will take, as Spits will make the most of his recovery. Its owner simply does not believe that such a thing could happen to them.

"It's so hard to believe that it's really happening," he said. "I thought:" Oh, that does not happen to people like me who are so familiar with the outdoors. "

Colorado Parks and Wildlife has posted warning signs throughout Durango.
