The Eiffel Tower was evacuated on Christmas Eve after the fire alarm sounded due to a technical problem in an elevator.

Around 1,000 people left the French historic monument on Tuesday morning so that French emergency services could check on the problem.

“It turned out to be a short circuit in the power line of an elevator,” said a spokesperson for SETE, the tower’s management company.

‘The technical problem occurred between the second floor and the top of the monument, which caused the fire alarm to be activated at 10.50am.

“In accordance with current security procedures, we evacuated the monument,” the spokesperson added.

Investigations followed to “identify the origin of this incident” and the tower would be “gradually reopened throughout the day.”

The 1,083-foot-tall Eiffel Tower is one of the most recognizable structures in the world and is visited by about 6 million people a year.

Fire safety has been stepped up at all Paris monuments since the devastating fire at nearby Notre Dame Cathedral in 2019.
