Adele is one of the most famous stars one win away from achieving EGOT status, as the acronym stands for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards, and she only lacks a Tony Award; she is pictured accepting an Oscar in 2013

The EGOT is one of the most prestigious clubs in all of America’s showbiz, and there are dozens of stars who are just one award away from achieving the prestigious title.

Adele, Bruce Springsteen, Cher and Dyke Van Dyke are all within reach of EGOT status.

The acronym stands for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards and is the designation for individuals who have won all four major American achievement awards.

Surprisingly, it was first coined in a 2009 episode of 30 Rock starring Tina Fey.

Adele, 35, only needs the Tony Award to complete her EGOT, having first won the Grammy Awards in 2009 when she took home Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for Chasing Pavements.

In 2013 she received an Oscar in the category Best Original Song for Skyfall from the James Bond film of the same name, and in 2022 she received the Primetime Emmy Award for her concert special Adele One Night Only.

Hollywood icon Dick Van Dyke, 98, only needs the Oscar as he earned the other three honors in the 1960s, starting with a Tony Award in the Best Featured Actor in a Musical category for his work in Bye Bye Birdie in 1961.

In 1964, he received the other two honors, including a Grammy in the Best Children’s Album category for Mary Poppins and the Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series Emmy for The Dick Van Dyke Show.

Bruce Springsteen needs an Emmy win as he won his first Grammy in 1985, winning Best Rock Vocal Performance, Male for Dancing In the Dark.

The 74-year-old music megastar then received an Oscar in the Best Original Song category for Streets Of Philadelphia in 1994, and just years ago in 2018, he received a special Tony Award.

Cher, 77, is just one Tony Award away from taking home the 1988 Academy Award in the Best Actress category for Moonstruck.

The living legend then earned a Grammy in the Best Dance Recording category for Believe in 2000 before an Emmy win in the Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special category for Cher: The Farewell Tour.

The EGOT is a good indicator of well-rounded talent, as these awards recognize excellence in television, recording, film and Broadway theater.

As in professional tennis and golf, EGOT status is considered the ‘grand slam’ of American entertainment.
