Horrified doctors removed a 30cm-long live eel from a man’s stomach after it apparently slipped into his rectum.
The 34-year-old man from Vietnam’s northern Quang Ninh province was admitted to hospital with severe abdominal cramps after complaining of stomach pain.
Local media say he was given an X-ray and an ultrasound, which showed there was a foreign body hidden in his abdomen.
This left him with intestinal perforation and peritonitis – a potentially fatal complication when the tissues lining the abdomen become swollen.
The patient underwent emergency surgery to remove the mystery object.
A 34-year-old Vietnamese man left surgeons horrified after removing a foot-long eel from his stomach during an operation.
The eel is believed to have entered the patient’s body by entering his anus, sliding down his colon and biting into his intestine.
When surgeons opened his abdomen, they were stunned to see the slimy creature.
Grim footage shows doctors using forceps to remove the eel, which was as long as a standard ruler.
Surgeons then carefully removed the necrotic tissue from his intestines.
The delicate operation in the Hải Hà district took place without incident and the man was quickly stabilized after the ordeal.
He was kept in hospital under observation with only mild abdominal discomfort.
When asked how the eel could have ended up in his stomach, the patient could not provide an answer.
But doctors believe it entered her anus, slid down her colon and somehow entered her abdomen.
Objects can escape from the intestines and enter the intestine if patients suffer from intestinal perforation.
What amazed the doctors most was that the eel was still alive when they removed it.
Doctor Pham Manh Hung told local media: “This is a rare case, the rectum is a site containing abundant fecal matter and prone to infection.
“However, the operation was carried out safely.”
