Tony-winning producer Edgar Lansbury has died at the age of 94.

Edgar was the younger brother of iconic actress Angela Lansbury and was himself an acclaimed producer working on Broadway and in film.

His son David Lansbury said The Hollywood Reporter who had died on Thursday at his home in Manhattan. No cause of death was given.

Among Lansbury’s most notable works is his producing credit for the 1974-75 Broadway revival of Gypsy, starring his sister; the play won a Tony.

Murder, She Wrote star Angelea died on October 11, 2022, aged 96. Edgar’s twin brother Bruce, who was also a producer, died in February 2017 at age 87.

Lansbury’s first Broadway production, Frank D. Gilroy’s 1964 play The Subject Was Roses, earned him the Tony Award for Best Play.

Other Broadway credits include The Only Game in Town (1968), Look to the Lilies (1970), The Magic Show (1974), American Buffalo (1977, Drama Desk nomination), and Lennon (2005).

In his later years, Lansbury was also a producer of Godspell on Broadway in 2011.

His film credits include The Wild Party and the film adaptations of The Subject Was Roses and Godspell.

In 2007 he received the John Houseman Award, presented by The Acting Company in honor of his commitment to developing classical actors and a national audience for theatre.

Actress Peggy Gordon, who appeared in Lansbury’s Godspell, posted a tribute on Facebook, writing:

“My huge, adorable, adoring Godspell family, we have now lost our surrogate father, Edgar Lansbury.”

‘How blessed he was to live such a full, rich, wonderful life surrounded by people who adored him. Don Scardino says there will likely be a memorial this fall.

‘Please reach out to each and every member of your Godspell family from the original ten companies, plus London (hello Gay) and anyone else you’ve missed. Man, if Joe Beruh was waiting for Edgar with a cigarette in his mouth, I have no doubt that Edgar made Joe stomp on him.

‘Love never dies. It is an energy that only transmutes into matter. That’s all of us. So, I think Edgar’s energy continues.”
