He and Amy, 32, from Merseyside, chartered a private jet to travel to Italy’s Amalfi Coast for the celebrations.

Their 35-year marriage inspired Richard E Grant to write a memoir, A Pocketful Of Happiness, based on his wife Joan’s final months before she succumbed to cancer.

So this week the actor had a special treat helping Sting celebrate his 32nd wedding anniversary with Trudie Styler at his Tuscan villa. “Loyalty, generosity and love,” Grant wrote in the caption of this photo of himself with Sting and Mickey, 40, the eldest of the couple’s four children.

The smart ones talk about… The Glyndebourne musicians who have to sleep under canvas

When the curtain falls on the final production of the season at Glyndebourne Opera in East Sussex tomorrow, pity those members of the orchestra who have to pack up their tents along with their instruments.

As well-heeled opera fans, who pay up to £280 for a ticket, pile empty champagne bottles into their picnic baskets, they will not know that some members of Glyndebourne’s resident orchestra, the London Philharmonic, have spent the three-month season camping out because local accommodation is too expensive. “The problem is that everything is now an Airbnb and much more expensive than a traditional B&B,” one musician tells me. “So some of those who live too far away to drive home each night bring tents to pitch at local campsites.”

Glyndebourne provides overnight accommodation for its orchestra’s instruments, as well as showers and changing facilities for the musicians, but nothing more. A spokesman tells me: “Musicians are paid for travel and distance travelled and are encouraged to use the free minibus service to and from Lewes station.”

Why doesn’t Justin dare to betray Mishal?

One of Mishal Husain’s colleagues on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme admits she leaves him petrified.

Referring to former US First Lady Michelle Obama, Justin Webb says: “She’s terrifying. I have to say she has a sternness to her that reminds me of Mishal Husain. She’s lovely and a good friend, but I wouldn’t want to betray her, and with Michelle Obama you get the impression that you wouldn’t want to betray her.”

Peter Davison, who rose to fame as Tristan Farnon in the BBC series All Creatures Great And Small, failed to impress everyone with his fame. Recalling a visit to a petrol station in his new Renault 18, the 73-year-old actor says: “The guy behind the till asked me if I was that vet on the telly. When I said yes, he said: ‘So why are you driving that load of rubbish?’ I collapsed.”

Beatles biographer Hunter Davies has encouraged his friend, Sixties model Miranda Poppy Symington, to write her memoirs at the age of 77.

The book includes an exchange with Princess Margaret, whom she met at a party in London’s Covent Garden. “I said to the princess, ‘I hope you had a nice day,'” she recalls in My Name Is Not Matilda: The Memoirs of Miranda. “Well,” the princess said, “I had to go to a horrible place in south London and open this salon. The problem is that my sister gets all the important jobs and I get the boring ones.”

Having won over friends such as Princess Beatrice with her themed dining sets, Alice Naylor-Leyland now works with royalty.

The socialite, 38, who is married to Tom Naylor-Leyland, heir to a baronetcy and the £176m Fitzwilliam landed fortune, has launched a new collection of tables designed with Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece, 55. Her husband Pavlos is the head of the former Greek royal family.

Alice shared this photo of the couple in the Hamptons, New York, with plates from the range, which cost £152 for a set of four.

“Collaborating with Princess Marie-Chantal on our new, cheerful pink and blue summer table has been a dream and a great honour,” says Alice.

“I have always admired your style and attention to detail.”

(Very) modern manners

Liberal Democrats are known for their beards, sandals and eating muesli, so one visitor to the National Liberal Club near Whitehall was shocked when his footwear gave her the creeps.

“The doorman was very dismissive of my sandals,” the customer said. “I pointed out that several women had just walked in wearing sandals and that he shouldn’t be so sexist.”

Katherine Ryan is happy to break taboos. The 41-year-old comedian, who has two daughters and a son, admits: “They say you shouldn’t have favourites, but I definitely love my eldest daughter more than anyone else in my family.”

The Canadian star of Channel 4’s 8 Out Of 10 Cats talk show has a three-year-old son and a 20-month-old daughter with civil partner Bobby Kootstra and a daughter from a previous relationship. She explains: “I feel comfortable saying that, only because she was a decade ahead of everyone else and she’s witness to this metamorphosis that I had.

“I had some complicated relationships and I was quite anxious, and I think I must have had very low self-esteem. In some ways, I had enough of something to forge this career, and she was my inspiration. I had my most incredible adventures with her.”
