Eddie Howe confirms that Jefferson Lerma of Bournemouth will not appear in the first game of the Premier League

Jefferson Lerma, who cost a record £ 25 million, will not be presented at Bournemouth in Cardiff

Eddie Howe believes that Bournemouth would be "stupid" to sign signing Jefferson Lerma in the opening match of the Premier League against Cardiff on Saturday.

Colombian midfielder Lerma completed his £ 25 million change from Levante this week, but Chief Howe revealed that the World Cup star is not ready for action.

The Cherries will start their fourth season in the Premier League by hosting Neil Warnock's Cardiff, but they must do so without two of their three summer recruits, and the Diego Rico side will also be suspended.

Howe admitted that Bournemouth will retain Lerma until the defensive midfielder fully fits.

"Jefferson only had one training session with us," said Howe.

"He has come to us for not training after the World Cup, so that will be a problem for us, in the sense that we have to improve his physical condition and help him get used to the team and the team.

"So there may be a period in which people do not see it, but we want to update it."

"I'm sure there are other players who were in the World Cup who will not play this weekend.

"The difficulty for us is that Jefferson has simply not trained.

"Then involve it before the players who played a full preseason would be silly.

"So we have to make sure that when Jefferson enters the field he's ready to play at his best, so we'll do a job with him behind the scenes."

"If he is not in a position to play, it would be foolish to play against him." We would never tell a player to miss the entire preseason, then intensify and play.

It's just not going to happen. So we'll take our time with him and make sure he's right.

Junior Stanislas should be out for a month with knee problems, while young midfielder Kyle Taylor is left out by a muscular complaint.

Long-serving midfielder Harry Arter joined Cardiff on loan, balancing the Bournemouth team after the arrival of David Brooks, forward of Lerma, Rico and Wales.

And manager Howe believes that the cherries have brought together the strongest squad so far in the club on the south coast.

"I think we have improved the team, I am very happy with our signings," he added.

"All 20 players that we have at the moment, all are established players good enough to play in the Premier League.

"And when Junior Stanislas and Kyle Taylor are back in shape, I think this is possibly the best team I've ever had."

"I think everyone is very strong, there is real competition for places in all departments."
