Earlier this month, Ed surprised schoolchildren with a surprise performance at their school assembly.
The singer stunned students and teachers at Fitzalan High School in Cardiff when he took to the stage and began performing his hit singles.
Ed’s impactful appearance was to launch the Ed Sheeran Foundation, which aims to improve access to music for more than 12,000 children and young people.
The hitmaker performed Thinking Out Loud and Shape Of You, before answering children’s questions.
Music education in the UK faces significant challenges, with needs varying across regions, schools and age groups.
While the UK music industry contributed a record £7.6 billion to the economy in 2024, disparities still remain in terms of access to music education.
A 2019 BPI survey revealed that one in four schools serving disadvantaged communities do not offer any music classes.

Ed’s beloved team lost 5-0 to their rivals
Since its launch, Ed’s foundation has already supported 18 grassroots music education organizations and public school music departments across the UK.
This support will directly impact 12,000 children and youth by improving access to instruments, creating performance opportunities and opening pathways into the music industry.
Ed went into more detail about why the new venture is so important to him, in a lengthy Instagram post, accompanied by a touching video of him speaking to schoolchildren about the importance of music.
He wrote in the caption: “I created @edsheeranfnd because music education is being given less and less importance lately.”
‘Even when I was at school they saw it as a ‘two-handed thing’ and didn’t take it seriously. There is a misconception that it is “not a real job”, when the music industry accounts for 216,000 jobs in many different fields and contributes up to £7.6bn a year to the UK economy.
‘Not to mention the power our art has around the world to bring joy to people. It’s something we should be proud of and stand up for in the UK, not sweep it under the rug and pretend we’re just bankers (no offense to the bankers, obviously).’
He continued: ‘It was incredible for my mental health as a child, to feel a sense of purpose and achievement, even learning piano or cello at a young age, long before writing songs.

The singer left students and teachers at Cardiff’s Fitzalan High School speechless when he took to the stage and began performing his hit singles.
‘I want children to be able to learn instruments, learn to produce, write songs and perform, and for apprenticeship programs to help them learn different skills to enter the industry.
‘I employ 150 people on tour and they all have different skills, there are also labels, management, publishing and promoters. Music is a key part of our society.
“The more I travel and visit schools and grassroots projects, the more I see that there is passion and inspiring people, who are being undervalued and neglected.”
The star signed off saying: “I hope this foundation is a start to giving them the support they need to move forward and showing them that they are very important to us.” More to follow, much love x.’
As well as providing practical support, the foundation advocates for greater recognition of the transformative power of music in the lives of young people and the essential role of music teachers.
