‘Easy three points for who plays Austria in the future’: Social media users mock Ralf Rangnick and welcome news he could turn his back on Manchester United consultancy to become manager of Austria

  • Rangnick was supposed to take on a two-year consultancy at Old Trafford

  • The German has been through a rough patch since joining United in December

Twitter users have welcomed the news that Ralf Rangnick could turn down a two-year consultancy at Manchester United to become the manager of the Austrian national team.

Social media’s reaction to Sportsmail’s exclusive piece that Rangnick would consider the Austrian FA’s offer has left the 63-year-old gloomy to read, with several United fans seemingly happy to see him.

Rangnick has been praised for his comments off the pitch but has endured a disappointing stint as interim manager at Old Trafford since joining the troubled club in December. United will almost certainly finish outside the top four and could finish the season as low as eighth.

‘Easily 3 points for who plays Austria in the near future,’ wrote @kingkie1994, while another user, @sportsfan265787, simply said, ‘Good.’

@Alex_Fergusoned added: ‘That would be a summary of how the club has functioned under the Glazers.’

Others think Rangnick will take on the role with Austria and possibly leave United, a wise move for both sides. “Great,” said @qazzar. “That’s a better role for him.”

United have struggled under Rangnick, whose recent lack of managerial experience was highlighted as a concern when he took the job, but @TCatch92 said: ‘His job is done.’

The German has four games left as United’s interim manager – starting with Thursday night’s home game against Chelsea – before taking on an unspecified advisory role at Old Trafford in the summer.

But Rangnick has been tempted to succeed Franco Foda as Austria’s boss and could cut his ties with United at the end of the season.

Rangnick’s advisory role has remained somewhat vague since he joined United from Lokomotiv Moscow in December as a temporary replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The terms of his contract with United for the next two years mean that he will only have to work six days a month.

On that basis, he could do both jobs, although that scenario seems unlikely.
