One person was injured after a truck caught fire on a major highway and hundreds of motorists faced traffic delays of almost an hour due to the dramatic incident.

The truck caught fire at 3.45pm on Friday, forcing all exit lanes of the West Gate Freeway near Bolt Bridge, Docklands in Melbourne’s east to be blocked.

Emergency crews were called to the scene and dozens of firefighters are currently working to put out the ferocious flames.

Thick columns of black smoke could be seen from the white truck, paralyzing traffic.

Hundreds of motorists returning home from work on the motorway are forced into traffic chaos as a result of the incident.

Vehicles have backed up onto the Monash Highway from the Domain Tunnel, causing traffic delays of more than 55 minutes.

Motorists traveling on the highway heading toward the West Gate Bridge are being diverted to two lanes on the far left leading to CityLink and Todd Road.
