Philadelphia Eagles fans are all saying the same thing after video of Ryan Caldwell abusing Packers fan goes viral

Snow begins to fall outside Lincoln Financial Field and Philadelphia Eagles fans talk about Christmas.

They refer to the game in December 1968, when a fan dressed as Santa Claus was pelted with snowballs. It was the day, these supporters say, when Eagles fandom was born. It’s a reputation that has endured for almost six decades.

Last week, Ryan Caldwell was filmed abusing a female Packers fan in a video that went viral. He called her an ‘ugly, stupid bastard’, he lost his job and is banned from coming back to this stadium.

It was the latest controversy involving Eagles fans and it reinforced the idea – at least in the eyes of their rivals – that these fans are aggressive, obnoxious and even violent.

But in the parking lots outside Lincoln Financial Field, fans want to paint a different picture.

“We don’t claim that guy,” Harrison says. “We’re definitely a tough fan base, but what he did went too far. And most fans agree with that.’

“He was an asshole,” another fan added. “You have a very vocal minority of Eagles fans who are like that. The majority of them are good people, great fans… what are we together? Passion.’

Harrison adds, “Philadelphia people are definitely very outspoken. We will let you know what we think about it. But don’t take it to heart… (there’s) no real enmity, no hatred for other fans. It’s just love for our teams.”

Joe, whose t-shirt reads “It’s a Philly thing.” Nobody likes us, we don’t care,” echoes the thoughts of many fans when asked what Eagles fans are really like.

“I don’t think it’s violence, it’s passion,” he says. “People definitely shouldn’t be talking like that guy on the video did. But people get a little intense and passionate about their team…that’s what it comes down to.”

He adds: “Honestly, there are people like that in every stadium. We certainly have a bad reputation. But most people aren’t like that.’

Joe occasionally hears about violence at Lincoln Financial Field. But he emphasizes: ‘You also hear about it in many different stadiums.

“It just doesn’t get blown up as often as when it happens here.”

That sense of unfair treatment is shared by Stephen—”other towns are definitely way worse than us”—and Vinny, who interrupts his game of cornhole to say, “THere are some people who give us a bad reputation… (but) for whatever reason, every time we have an example, it seems like everyone is chasing us.”

He adds, “It’s just easy to get hung up on the reputation or the perception of the Eagles fans… you have national media based in New York, one of our biggest rivals.

“So you have all these talking heads coming on top of us when these incidents happen – and they should – but it’s not the same when it happens in other places… (there are) fights, stabbings, murders.

‘What that man said was terrible. But we’re not killing anyone here… we have to go on an apology tour – there are 70,000 people here, one person made a crazy move and now everyone has to apologize for it every time. I don’t know why that is, but it’s annoying, I can tell you that.’

He points out that Steelers fans were filmed fighting each other last week. He was also quick to condemn Caldwell, but Vinny believes the Packers fans were looking for trouble.

‘Of course that man shouldn’t have said what he said. But this guy came in with a YouTube channel and a GoFundMe, looking for something to happen.”
