Dyson OnTrac headphones

Dyson has announced Their second pair of over-ear headphones, and the first that doesn’t look like a high-tech mask.

Dyson calls the new cans In Trac. which should not be confused with the shipping company of the same name and spelling. Unlike previous Dyson Zone headphones, the OnTrac headphones aren’t attached to an air purifier that wraps around your mouth and makes you look like a cosplayer. Dyson describes the OnTrac as “only audio” headphones just to make the distinction clear.

The Dyson OnTrac headphones are customizable and start at $500.

These are expensive headphones, aimed at audiophiles and anyone willing to spend upwards of $500 on a good, comfortable set of sound cannons. The OnTrac’s design is also extremely customizable; Dyson allows users to swap out the ear cushions and outer caps of the headphones to change their colors. At launch, there will only be four color options, but Dyson says there will be more options later. The company says the headphones will have many of the features of a modern, high-quality headset, including noise cancellation that can reduce up to 40 decibels of noise. Dyson says the OnTrac will also come with a truly incredible battery life of 55 hours with normal use.

The OnTrac headphones aren’t on sale yet, and Dyson hasn’t indicated when they will be. But once they are available, they’ll start at $500, with some customizations increasing the price from there.

Here are some other consumer tech news from this week.

Prime now, pay later

Congratulations to everyone who bought those cheaper AirPods on Amazon this week. You’ve helped make Prime Day 2024 the biggest Prime Day ever. Amazon absorbed 14.2 billion dollars in sales during the two-day deal event. That’s a considerable increase from its 2023 sale, which earned a meager 12 billion dollars.

Amazon Prime Day sales were higher than ever, thanks in part to the proliferation of buy now, pay later plans. According to Adobe AnalysisPeople bought more than $1 billion worth of stuff through these deferred payment plans. That’s great for Apple and anyone else who’s happy with their shiny new 65-inch OLED TV, but it’s worth noting that BNPL plans come with hidden dangers that can lead people to go into over-debt.

Pixel Glance

After many details about Google’s new phones were leaked, the company decided to simply show off its next Pixel to the world. In a post on X, Google revealed the First official look on its Pixel 9 Pro. Google teased the phone’s integration with the company’s Gemini AI software and said more details about the phone lineup will be available on August 13. (Expect these Pixels to be packed with AI, if Google’s recent product announcements have given us any clue.)
