Dylan Wright has finally broken his silence after viewers criticized his performance at Advance Australia Fair during the first State of Origin game.

The Australia Idol winner was accused of ‘killing’ the national anthem when he performed a ‘hipster’ version of the well-known song in front of 75,000 people at Sydney’s Accor Stadium.

“I was honored to be a part of this,” he told Daily Mail Australia at Chicago’s opening night at the Capitol Theater on Thursday.

“The main thing I found was that people know the words now, especially after they changed them three years ago, so I’m happy with how everything turned out,” he continued.

“I’m a football lover, so I was delighted to be there.”

Dylan offered a stripped-down, guitar-based performance of the anthem written by Scottish-born Australian songwriter Peter Dodds.

However, many viewers were offended by the singer’s ‘diabolical’ performance.

It wasn’t long before they flooded X, formerly known as Twitter, with their thoughts.

‘What is this the Hipster Anthem? Diabolical,” wrote one viewer.

‘No, fuck this national anthem. “You can’t make a version of the anthem,” added another.

I’m not a fan of artists who put their spin on the national anthem. Either sing it correctly or just play Julie Anthony’s recording,’ commented one more.

“Just when you thought the national anthem couldn’t get any worse,” wrote a fourth.

“Might be the worst anthem performance in recent memory,” joked another.

‘Get this singing hymn out of here and sing the hymn correctly,’ one more commented.
