A young Muslim woman who started a drunken brawl at a bowling alley has been allowed to wear an electronic “sobriety” tag after she claimed it would hinder her preparation for Friday prayers.
Husina Hussain, 20, faced having to wear the device on her ankle by court order after she tackled manager Ami Singleton on the spot and launched into racial abuse before lashing out and attacking police, calling them: ‘F* ***** g whites.’
But his lawyer, Seraj Khan, pleaded with judges not to impose an alcohol abstinence order, saying Hussain had stopped drinking and that etiquette would prevent him from completing wudhu, the ritual washing Muslims perform before prayer.
According to Islam, Muslims must be clean and wear good clothes before appearing before God.
Khan told the court: ‘Her faith had been strengthened since the incident. The prospect of wearing an alcohol control tag worries him, as he now prays regularly and must wash thoroughly as part of this. He feels that he could not clean up completely unless he could remove this label.

Hussain has no prior convictions. In mitigation, his lawyer, Mr. Seraj Khan, said that his client had gone cold turkey and had stopped drinking since the attack.
He added: ‘There have also been no further incidents with the police. She has tried to change her life and all this has been done without support. She has undiagnosed PTSD, which was the reason she was drinking in the first place. This stems from the trauma she received as a child.
Passing sentence, JP Ronald Marshall told Hussain: ‘Rehab days will address the root of the main problem, alcohol. This was an isolated incident and you are of good character. This matter has been going on for some time: put it behind you and move on.
