Rodrigo, who has appeared in Disney staples such as High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and Bizaardvark, has had more success on the charts than on the road in her early days as the Driver’s License, which was released in January, debuted in the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100
Rodrigo’s achievements with the pop ballad include having the 10th single ever to debut in the top spot – and the only time it happened with a female artist’s solo debut. The song also smashed a Spotify mark for having the most streams of a song in one week.
Speak with Zane Lowe from Apple Music earlier this month, Rodrigo opened up about her immense early success on the charts and the pressure that comes with making such a huge splash.
“Driver’s license success has been a huge lesson in how to just let go of a song when you release a song,” she said. And it’s everyone’s song to interpret, it’s not your song anymore.

“But it is quite difficult to have that my first song ever, because the success is so immense.”
She started talking about the dynamics behind her successor, Déjà Vu.
“I’m a little obsessed with the concept of déjà vu,” she said. ‘I get déjà vu all the time. And so I thought it would be a cool play on words to use déjà vu as a metaphor for this very universal thing that happens when you break up with someone and they get along with someone else, and they see life the way you’ve lived. ‘
Rodrigo’s debut album will be released on May 21.
