A driver was taken into custody after a minivan crashed into the front doors of the Philadelphia Police Department headquarters, authorities said.
The incident occurred on Tuesday a little before 5 am., according to ABC 6. The vehicle did not make it through the building’s lobby on Broad Street, though the bronze door was completely smashed in the crash.
A loud bang was heard at the moment of impact, followed by anguished screams from the driver.
“They are killing me! They are killing me!” The driver could be heard screaming as his Honda Odyssey minivan hurtled toward the building.
When someone at the scene asked who was hurting him, the man said it was the police, ABC 6 reported.
Law enforcement officers quickly removed the unidentified driver from his vehicle and brought him into the building for questioning. He was seen a short time later being placed in a patrol car. He was reportedly taken to hospital for treatment and evaluation.
The minivan remained outside the building Tuesday morning and one lane of southbound Broad Street near Callowhill Street was closed as police continued to investigate.
It is unclear if the driver intentionally rammed his vehicle into police headquarters.
The building in question once housed the offices of the Philadelphia Inquirer. The newspaper left the building in 2012, a decade before the police moved in.
