Drink COFFEE Before Exercising to Burn Fat Faster, New Study Says

  • Drinking coffee 30 minutes before exercise increases fat burning, scientists have found
  • Researchers at the University of Granada found that this is especially true in the afternoon
  • Caffeine is one of the most popular performance enhancing sports supplements

Drinking coffee before exercise helps burn fat faster, according to a new study.

Enjoying a strong cup of coffee half an hour before exercise significantly increases fat burning – especially in the afternoon, scientists have discovered.

Caffeine is one of the most popular performance-enhancing sports supplements and is taken by athletes around the world to improve endurance and physical abilities.

But despite its widespread use, there is little scientific evidence for its oxidation or fat-burning properties.

Now scientists at the University of Granada (UGR) in Spain have discovered the best combination of coffee and exercise for weight loss.

Lead author assistant professor Francisco José Amaro-Gahete said: “ The recommendation to exercise on an empty stomach in the morning to increase fat oxidation is commonplace.

However, this recommendation may be scientifically substantiated, as it is not known whether this increase is due to exercise in the morning or from being without food for a longer period of time. ‘

The researchers asked 15 men to take an aerobic exercise test four times at seven-day intervals.

Each time they were given 3 mg / kg of caffeine, which is equivalent to a strong cup of coffee, or a placebo at 8:00 am or 5:00 pm.

Pre-exercise conditions were controlled, including the amount of time since their last meal.

They found that drinking coffee half an hour before sweating increased fat oxidation, especially in the afternoon.

Assistant Prof Amaro-Gahete said: ‘The results of our study showed that acute caffeine intake 30 minutes before performing an aerobic exercise test increased maximum fat oxidation during exercise, regardless of the time of day.

“The existence of a daily variation in fat oxidation during exercise was confirmed, the values are higher in the afternoon than in the morning for equal hours of fasting.”

Their results showed that combining ‘acute caffeine’ and moderate afternoon exercise is the best way to burn fat.

More than 60 percent of the population in the UK is overweight or obese, meaning they have a BMI (body mass index) of over 25.

Obesity has been linked to the leading causes of death worldwide, including diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

About 95 million cups of coffee are drunk every day in the UK, of which the over-70s are the heaviest drinkers.

The findings are published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition.
