Drew McIntyre has insisted he will leave WWE if he does not defeat Seth Rollins for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 40 on Sunday.
MailSport understands the former two-time world champion ended his WWE contract at the end of May and no new deal has been agreed or signed.
Over the years in WWE, the company would gradually remove a star from major storylines if they didn’t sign a new contract. Dean Ambrose is a prime example of that before he left to become Jon Moxely in AEW.
For McIntyre, he has arguably been in the best form of his career and certainly in his best form since first becoming champion in the coronavirus pandemic.
Triple H has bucked many trends since taking over operations from Vince McMahon and keeping McIntyre involved in the world title picture is another indicator of a new era.
Speaking at WWE World, the company’s fan convention during WrestleMania week, McIntyre insisted he will leave WWE if he doesn’t win the title on night two.
“If I can’t beat Seth Rollins on Sunday, I…frankly, I shouldn’t be in this industry.” I’m leaving WWE,’ McIntyre told Byron Saxton.
WWE has already announced Clash of the Castle: Scotland for June 15, which will take place at the Hydro Arena in Glasgow.
McIntyre appears in all the promotional material and will of course be a big draw as a hometown hero.
MailSport understands that even if he is yet to sign a new long-term contract, the idea that he could sign a short-term deal to be able to perform at the show has been mooted.
The Scottish Warrior would almost certainly attract a huge offer from AEW if he were allowed to enter free agency.
The world’s number two professional wrestling company returns to Wembley Stadium for All In on August 25 later this year and would like to entertain the idea of another UK draw like McIntyre.
There are still high hopes that the 38-year-old will re-sign with WWE. It is understood that the delay has less to do with money and more to do with creativity and McIntyre’s importance on the roster.
