Chelsea have been keeping a close eye on striker target Viktor Gyokeres, according to reports from Portugal, with club scouts in attendance for Sweden’s heavy 5-2 loss to Portugal on Thursday night.

Gyokeres has risen to prominence since joining Sporting Club de Portugal from Coventry City and is believed to be a name high on the charts of a number of European clubs.

Chelsea are believed to be one of them, with London rivals Arsenal also believed to be monitoring the Sweden international’s progress with interest.

The Blues’ need for a No. 9 has become a consistent concern throughout the season, with Nicolas Jackson at one point finishing on his own since his arrival last summer from Villarreal.

Although Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side left Portugal with their tails between their legs, Gyokere’s at least gave the scouts in attendance something to take back to west London.

With his side already 4-0 down, Gyokeres netted to restore some pride in his side’s performance, although he was withdrawn 10 minutes later and the game ended 5-2.

It is not the first time Blues scouts have been on hand to take in a Gyokeres performance this term as the summer transfer window fast approaches.

According to reports, this was the third time Gyokeres has had admirers from west London in the crowd, and there are plenty of reasons why he has garnered so much praise – 36 of them in fact.

In all competitions, this is the number of goals Gyokeres has scored since joining Sporting after narrowly missing out on promotion to the Premier League with Coventry at the end of 2022-23.

Blues scouts were at the ground on December 18 for a clash with historic rivals Porto before heading back again at the end of February for the Portuguese Cup derby with Benfica.

In both of those games, Gyokeres found the back of the net and he is actually in 11th place in the race for Europe’s Golden Boot.

The award is awarded based on the number of goals scored in the season, with greater weighting given to those plying their trade in the top five leagues given the higher quality of defense and greater difficulty of play.

Gyokeres is behind Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane, but still manages the likes of Jude Bellingham, Ollie Watkins and Mohamed Salah, as well as many more.
