Ajax star Donny van de Beek insists he remains committed to the club despite reported interest from Manchester United and Real Madrid.

The midfielder had another impressive season for the Eredivisie side, scoring 14 goals and providing seven assists in all competitions, before the Dutch top flight was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 23-year-old admitted that the transfer market was complicated by the virus, calling it ‘a messy period’, although he insisted it could have been different without the global chaos.

“It is very messy, at least a very messy period in terms of transfers,” he said Fox Sports. ‘Nothing is certain yet. I am still a player of Ajax and I am still proud of it.

‘If it hadn’t been for the coronavirus, it might have been different now. There is now no clarity and it remains to be seen how it will turn out. ‘

Van de Beek first emerged as a major transfer target for some of Europe’s elite clubs after starring in the run-up to the 2018/19 Champions League semi-final when he scored against Tottenham.

He’s been tipped off for a move to Old Trafford or the Bernabeu in recent months, with United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer aiming for midfield reinforcements.

But van de Beek says he will not insist on a move and will be satisfied if he stays with Ajax for the 2020-2021 season.

“I’m still here and after all these years still having a lot of fun,” he said. ‘If I also play at Ajax next season, I will still have a lot of fun. You won’t hear me complain. ‘

A product of the club’s famed academy, Van de Beek will join stars such as Matthijs de Ligt, who has since moved to Juventus, and Frenkie de Jong, who came to Barcelona.

He played a total of 175 games for his youth club, scored 41 times and won the Eredivisie title and the Dutch Cup in 2018/19.

Ajax was the favorite to reclaim the title in 2019/20, before league officials chose to annul the season in the aftermath of the pandemic.
