The special counsel investigating Donald Trump for mishandling classified documents and attempting to overturn the 2020 vote has cost American taxpayers more than $10 million so far, including $2 million in security.
Jack Smith was appointed on November 18 and now has a team of 40 to 60 prosecutors, paralegals and support staff working for him.
On June 8, he charged Trump with 37 counts related to the illegally stored documents at Mar-a-Lago. He is expected to file charges related to interfering in the 2020 election soon.
Trump repeatedly refers to Smith, a former war crimes prosecutor, as “unhinged,” and has shared on social memes that show him brandishing a baseball bat in the direction of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who is prosecuting him for hush money payments from the porn star.
Smith, his family and other prosecutors are being protected by US Marshalls, at a cost so far of $2 million.

Trump is seen in Manhattan court on April 4, being arraigned on federal charges related to hush money payments made to Stormy Daniels.
Smith’s wife, documentary filmmaker Katy Chevigny, also came under fire from Trump after he learned that she produced a documentary on Michelle Obama, Becoming, and that she had donated to Joe Biden’s campaign.
The couple lived in the Netherlands until last year and have a young daughter.
His work, which covers the riots on January 6, is widely seen as one of the most extensive and complicated cases in history.
At the height of the Justice Department’s work to bring those responsible for the riots to justice, many US attorneys’ offices and the 56 FBI field offices had officers looking for leads.
At one point, more than 600 officers and office support staff were assigned to riot cases.
Smith’s research The New York Times reported, are currently on track to cost American taxpayers $25 million.
“What Jack Smith is doing is pretty cheap considering the momentous nature of the charges,” said Timothy J. Heaphy, a former federal prosecutor who served as a lead investigator for the House committee that investigated the Capitol assault.

Smith’s team is significantly larger than that of Robert K. Hur, who is investigating President Biden’s handling of classified documents after he left the vice presidency.
Hur has about 10 to 20 people working for him and has spent about $1.2 million since his January-March appointment, giving a likely annual cost of $5.6 million..
Robert Mueller’s investigation into the 2016 connections between the Trump campaign and Russia was on a similar scale to Smith’s, but even smaller.
Mueller spent $8.5 million in its first six months.
Trump said Sunday that the spending was ridiculous.

Trump, seen on Saturday, said on Sunday that the spending was absurd

“Whenever you see these crazy radicals and their partners in the fake news media talking about the “trials and tribulations” of President Donald J. Trump, remember it’s all a coordinated hoax, just like the Russia, Russia, Russia, Mueller “no collusion” witch hunt, fake dossier, FISA fraud and everything in between, to STEAL ANOTHER ELECTION through PROCESS MISCONDUCT at levels never seen before in the US. over $25,000,000!!!’
He added: ‘Just think about it! Between Mueller, Deranged Jack Smith, and congressional committees, more than $100 million has been spent investigating me since I walked down the escalator at Trump Tower.
‘Biden is a criminal and, by comparison, almost no money has been spent investigating him.
‘Be smart Republicans, they’re trying to steal your election!’
