New poll shows Trump widening lead to 4 percent over President Joe Biden in key state of Michigan

Donald Trump’s lead over President Joe Biden in the key state of Michigan grew to 4 percent after the assassination attempt, according to a new poll.

Before the Trump-Biden debate last month, the former president held a 4 percent lead in a hypothetical matchup.

After Biden’s disastrous performance last month and Trump’s shooting at a rally in Pennsylvania last Saturday, Michigan voters in a Detroit Free Press/EPIC-MRA Poll They now favor the former president by 7 percent.

Trump held his first rally since the assassination attempt in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The event was held in an enclosed space, atypical for a Trump rally, but it allowed security agents access to more controlled areas.

The rally was also the first after Trump became the Republican Party’s official 2024 nominee at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Biden flipped Michigan Democratic in 2020, beating Trump by 2.8 percent after the Republican won the key Rust Belt state in 2016 by just 0.3 percent.

When third-party candidates were considered among the 600 likely voters in Michigan, the five-candidate race showed Trump ahead by the same seven percent margin: 43 percent to 36 percent.

The poll conducted before the debate, which included third-party candidates who were listed as favorites, still had Trump ahead by a slim 3 percent margin (41 percent to 38 percent).

Notably, the former president is ahead in all regions of the key state, including the deep blue city of Detroit and its surrounding areas.

This is arguably the biggest indicator that the political clout has shifted in Biden’s favor in the 2024 race amid a flurry of calls from Democrats for him to step aside.

Trump held his first post-nomination rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Saturday, July 20, exactly one week after he was shot in an assassination attempt at his event in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Despite the narrow lead, Trump leads in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties by a margin of 46 percent to 44 percent, according to the latest poll.

In this region, Biden beat Trump by 56 percent to 40 percent in 2020.

Biden’s dire polling results are likely to contribute to the president’s consideration of his next steps, says EPIC-MRA pollster Bernie Porn.

“This will only increase the pressure on Biden to step aside and have someone else replace him,” the Lansing-based pollster said. “Democrats are in a tough spot.”
