President Donald Trump threatened Monday to revoke the Republican convention scheduled for Charlotte this summer if the state’s democratic governor will not reduce restrictions on staying at home and allow “full presence.”
Trump brought the threat – which has a significant economic impact on the state of the battlefield – right after days after he threatened to hold back Michigan funding over the governor’s proposals for ballots during the coronavirus pandemic.
“I love the great state of North Carolina so much that I insisted on holding the Republican National Convention in Charlotte at the end of August. Unfortunately, Democratic Governor @RoyCooperNC is still in the mood to shut down and cannot guarantee that by August … we will have full participation in the Arena, ‘Trump wrote.

In other words, we would spend millions of dollars to build the Arena at a very high level without even knowing if the Democratic Governor would allow the Republican Party to fully occupy the space. Plans are being made … by many thousands of avid Republicans and others to go to beautiful North Carolina in August. They should get an immediate response from the governor as to whether or not space will be fully occupied, “said Trump, who further challenges the threat.
“If not, we will be reluctantly forced … to find another Republican National Convention site, with all the jobs and economic development it entails. This is not something I want to do. Thanks, and I LOVE the people of North Carolina! Trump concluded.
Donald Trump threatened to withdraw the GOP convention from the state for August
Democrats plan their own convention in Milwaukee. They have put it off until later in the summer and are making contingencies for a virtual convention. The GOP convention is scheduled for August 24.
The state is an important election prize. Trump is one point ahead in the RealClearPolitics average.
Conventions are planned more than a year in advance and moving such a large enterprise, while freeing up enough hotel space for delegates, global media and the secret service, amid a pandemic would be a major logistical challenge.
