Melinda Martinez, 43, whose daughter died after getting into a car with a drunk driver, said she could see “angels” at the crash site.
Isabelle González, 16, went out with three friends and drank alcohol and smoked marijuana.
‘I wanted to know everything she went through, good or bad.
‘They gave me some photos and as we looked at them I said ‘Oh my God, these are angels.’
‘I felt that my daughter was so special that God allowed us to give ourselves that moment.
“I think if I hadn’t seen those photos I wouldn’t be here today because I wanted to be with her so much.”
The accident occurred on March 15, 2018, after Isabelle asked Melinda if she could go out with some friends.
The next morning, Melinda woke up and noticed that Isabelle was not there and called her school, who mistakenly said that she had shown up.
Melinda said: ‘The school told me she was there but had missed first and second period.
“They said they couldn’t find her because there was a cheerleading rally, which made sense since she was a cheerleader.
“They gave me some photos and as we were looking at them I said, ‘Oh my God, these are angels,’ Melinda Martinez said.
The accident occurred on March 15, 2018, after Isabelle asked Melinda if she could go out with some friends.
‘When school finished and she still wasn’t home, I called my mom and told her what was happening.
“She started getting scared and told me that there had been a car accident and that a girl and a boy had died.”
Melinda began contacting different hospitals without success until she called the Regional Medical Center in San Jose, California, who told her to come.
Once Melinda arrived with her mother, security took her to an upstairs room.
She said: ‘I thought, how sad for the parents of the girl I’m going to have to identify.
‘We went upstairs and I saw Isabelle’s best friend and I just fell to the floor.
“The security guard said it was okay because she was alive and I said ‘you don’t understand, if she’s alive then my baby is gone’.”
Melinda and her mother came downstairs and her family was waiting at the front desk.
Melinda discovered that Isabelle had gone out with her best friend, her boyfriend, and a friend of his.
He said his father and stepfather were the ones who identified Isabelle’s body.
She said: ‘I saw my dad was talking to a police officer and I was looking at him for a reaction.
‘He started walking towards me and I started shouting ‘dad, is that her?’
“He kept walking towards me and said, ‘Yes, honey, it’s her,’ and my heart stopped.
‘I just felt like I needed to be with her on whatever trip she was on.
“I just wanted to hold her and be with her. I still felt her close to me, I didn’t feel like she was gone.”
Melinda discovered that Isabelle had gone out with her best friend, her boyfriend, and a friend of hers.
Isabelle was sitting in the rear passenger seat when the car lost control and crashed into a tree, killing the driver and Isabelle at the scene.
It was later reported that the driver, Brandon Gómez Hunsperger, was under the influence of alcohol.
Isabelle’s funeral was held on April 3, 2018, and Melinda said it was a “beautiful” ceremony as her cheer team came out to pay their respects.
She said: ‘It was a heartbreaking day, my family is all girls.
‘I have two sisters, my sister has two daughters and I have two daughters.
‘When they started to lower Isabelle’s body to the ground, I was a mess.
‘I asked them to open the coffin because I wanted to hug her for the last time.
‘Isabelle was super fun, she had many friends and everyone loved her.
“When she put on her cheerleading uniform she lit up the whole world; it was amazing to see her shine like that.”
