Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star Freddie Freeman has a hairline fracture in his right middle finger but plans to play through it.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced the injury Monday night. Freeman suffered the injury while fielding a ball on the field in Saturday’s loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. The x-rays came back negative.but Freeman missed Sunday’s series finale against St. Louis.
Roberts revealed to reporters On Monday, a subsequent CT scan revealed the fracture, but that Freeman would play Monday night against the Seattle Mariners. According to reporters, Roberts said the Dodgers did not give much consideration to placing Freeman on the injured list and that Freeman said he was able to play through the pain.He was in his normal position at first base in Monday’s lineup.
Dodgers activate Muncy and Edman
Although Freeman avoided the injured list, the The Dodgers announced multiple roster moves on Monday. Third baseman Max Muncy is back from a right oblique strain that kept him off the disabled list since May 17. The Dodgers also activated infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman for his Dodgers debut.
The Dodgers acquired Edman from the Cardinals in a trade on July 29. Edman had been sidelined all season following offseason wrist surgery. Freeman, Muncy and Edman were included in Monday’s lineup against the Mariners.
The Dodgers also recalled catcher Hunter Feduccia from the minors. In corresponding moves, they designated infielder Nick Ahmed for assignment, sent outfielder Andy Pages to the injured list and placed catcher Austin Barnes on the disabled list.
The Dodgers also transferred pitcher River Ryan to the 60-day injured list. The rookie pitcher made four MLB starts before initially landing on injured reserve with an elbow injury that requires Tommy John surgery and is expected to sideline him for the 2025 season.
Dodgers battle injuries, lead NL West
The news that Freeman, Muncy and Edman were available Monday was welcomed by a Dodgers team that has been plagued by injuries. Ryan is the sixth Dodgers pitcher to need Tommy John surgery in recent seasons, joining Dustin May, Tony Gonsolin, Emmet Sheehan, Walker Buehler and Kyle Hurt.
Two-way star Shohei Ohtani is limited in hitting thanks to his own elbow surgery that kept him off the mound in 2024. Pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who joined the Dodgers from Japan on a 12-year, $325 million contract in the offseason, has not played since a rotator cuff injury on June 16.
Despite injuries, the Dodgers have maintained control of the NL West. They entered action Monday with a 73-52 record and a three-game lead over the San Diego Padres in the division.
