A doctor has revealed the five things she avoids before sending her children back to school.

Dr. Natalie Azarmother of two children, appeared in the Today show to share what she’s learned in preparing for the hectic start to the school year.

The overall goal, of course, is to get children to school on time and in the best physical and mental condition possible so they can concentrate and learn.

First and foremost, never skip vaccinations.

This includes the COVID booster shot, as well as vaccines against measles, mumps, rubella, polio and meningitis, in addition to seasonal flu.

Mother of two Dr. Natalie Azar appeared on the Today show to share what she learned in preparing for the hectic start of the school year.

“This is vitally important to keep not only your child safe, but also the community,” he stressed.

Second, don’t start the school year without an established bedtime routine.

Children ages six to twelve need between nine and twelve hours of sleep, while children ages thirteen to eighteen need between eight and ten hours of sleep.

“Children who do not get enough sleep can not only have an impact on their physical and mental health, but also on their academic performance,” she explained.

She suggested preparing children for earlier wake-ups by putting them to bed 15 minutes earlier and getting up 15 minutes earlier, and gradually progressing toward the target wake-up time until they have adjusted.

Third: Don’t send your children out without breakfast.

Eating a healthy breakfast is as important as getting sleep, Dr. Azar argued.

Children who do not receive a “proper” breakfast may have poorer school performance, reduced attention span, and poorer ability to handle frustration.

Fourth: Never send them to school without an “action plan” for any medical problem or condition.

This is especially relevant for children with conditions such as asthma, allergies, type 1 diabetes, epilepsy, etc.

“Make sure the school nurse has easily legible instructions from the pediatrician and medications that are not expired,” Dr. Azar said.

Finally: do not send them to school if they are sick with certain symptoms.

A fever of 101°F or higher, or vomiting or diarrhea, within the past 24 hours means they should stay home, without a doubt.

However, a mild cough or cold is no reason to leave them at home.
